Chapter 2 · Verse 28 · Sankhya Yoga
Bhagavad Gita 2.28
Sanskrit
Transliteration
avyaktādīni bhūtāni vyakta-madhyāni bhārata avyakta-nidhanānyeva tatra kā paridevanā
In plain words
You are grieving—a loss, a change, an ending that feels like it shouldn't have to happen. Krishna says: everything you can see and touch, including this body and this life as you know it, emerges from something eternal and returns to it. The part of you that is real, that witnesses your pain right now, was never born and will never die. Your sorrow comes from clinging to the form; the wise grieve less because they know what is truly permanent.
Word by Word
All beings emerge from the unmanifest—that eternal, unchanging consciousness—and return to it at death. In between, we are given the gift of a visible, changing form to grow and serve.
Why then grieve this natural cycle? The wise see beyond the temporary body to the eternal Self that witnesses all transformations, and this vision liberates them from the cycle of mourning and attachment that binds the ordinary heart.
