urgent Dharma & Duty Fear & Courage Self & Identity

Sanskrit

Transliteration

śhrī bhagavān uvācha kutastvā kaśhmalamidaṁ viṣhame samupasthitam anārya-juṣhṭamaswargyam akīrti-karam arjuna

Word by Word

śhrī-bhagavān uvācha the Supreme Lord said
kutaḥ wherefrom
tvā to you
kaśhmalam delusion
idam this
viṣhame in this hour of peril
samupasthitam overcome
anārya crude person
juṣhṭam practiced
aswargyam which does not lead to the higher abodes
akīrti-karam leading to disgrace
arjuna Arjun
Simplified Perspective

Krishna's opening words cut through Arjuna's paralysis with a surgeon's precision—he names the delusion for what it is, not as judgment but as mirror. This is the eternal voice within you, refusing to let you settle into cowardice dressed as sensitivity.

The Lord teaches us that confusion masquerading as compassion is still confusion, and only truth-seeing, not self-doubt, honors the sacred duty before us. When life calls you to act with integrity, pause and ask: am I hesitating from wisdom, or am I fleeing from what I know I must face?
