Ramaskandam Mantra — Hindi Lyrics
Ramaskandam Mantra is a short Sanskrit verse traditionally recited at bedtime. It names five protectors: Rama; Skanda (Kartikeya, also called Murugan), the warrior son of Shiva; Hanuman; Garuda, called Vainateya, 'son of Vinata'; and Bhima, called Vrikodara, 'wolf-bellied', the strongest of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata. The second line says that whoever remembers them every night at bedtime is freed from bad dreams.
'Ramaskandam' isn't one word. The verse begins 'Ramam Skandam', two names side by side, and the mantra is commonly known by those opening sounds.
The idea is simple: before sleep, you bring to mind figures who stand for courage, loyalty and protection. Many families teach this verse to children for this reason. Chant it slowly, three times, once you're in bed, and let your breathing settle.

How to Chant Ramaskandam Mantra
- 1
Find a quiet, clean space
Sit in a comfortable, undisturbed environment. Face east or north if possible. You may light incense or a candle to set a contemplative atmosphere.
- 2
Settle into a comfortable posture
Sit cross-legged on the floor or upright in a chair. Keep the spine erect and place the hands on the knees with palms facing upward.
- 3
Take three cleansing breaths
Inhale slowly through the nose, hold briefly, and exhale completely. Repeat three times to calm the mind and prepare for mantra recitation.
- 4
Begin chanting Ramaskandam Mantra
Chant the mantra clearly and with devotion — aloud, in a whisper, or silently. Use a mala (108 beads) to count repetitions. Aim for a consistent, unhurried rhythm throughout the session.
- 5
Rest in stillness
After completing your chanting, sit quietly for two to five minutes. Allow the vibration of the mantra to settle within. Close the practice with a moment of gratitude.

Story & Symbolism
This is a short remembrance verse of the kind families recite at fixed moments of the day: on waking, before meals, at bedtime. Its second line tells you its purpose: remembered every night at bedtime, these five names keep bad dreams away.
The five are chosen for strength and protection. Rama is the ideal of dharma. Skanda is the commander of the gods' army. Hanuman is fearless loyalty. Garuda is the swift carrier of Vishnu and destroyer of serpents. Bhima is the strongest of the Pandavas.
The verse is widely printed in prayer collections and passed on in families, often taught to children. We haven't found it in the epics themselves, so we present it as a traditional verse rather than a scripture quotation.
How to Use in Daily Life
At Bedtime
Once you're in bed, chant the verse slowly three times. Picture each of the five figures as you name them, then let your breathing settle.
With Children
Teach it line by line as part of a bedtime routine. Saying the five names together is a gentle way to end the day.
After a Bad Dream
Sit up, breathe slowly and chant the verse once or twice before lying back down.
Tuesdays and Saturdays
These days are traditionally kept for Hanuman. Some people chant the verse 11 or 108 times on them as part of their Hanuman worship.
