Bhagavad Gita 10.26

contemplative Jnana & Wisdom Self & Identity

Sanskrit

अश्वत्थः सर्ववृक्षाणां देवर्षीणां च नारदः। गन्धर्वाणां चित्ररथः सिद्धानां कपिलो मुनिः।।10.26।।

Transliteration

aśhvatthaḥ sarva-vṛikṣhāṇāṁ devarṣhīṇāṁ cha nāradaḥ gandharvāṇāṁ chitrarathaḥ siddhānāṁ kapilo muniḥ

Word by Word

aśhvatthaḥ the banyan tree
sarva-vṛikṣhāṇām amongst all trees
deva-ṛiṣhīṇām amongst celestial sages
cha and
nāradaḥ Narad
gandharvāṇām amongst the gandharvas
chitrarathaḥ Chitrarath
siddhānām of all those who are perfected
kapilaḥ muniḥ sage Kapil
Simplified Perspective

Krishna reveals the infinite through the finite—the banyan tree stands as the axis mundi among all trees, just as Narad embodies divine transmission among sages, and Kapila holds the crown of perfected wisdom among the Siddhas. This verse teaches us that the Divine is not distant but woven into the very fabric of creation, expressing itself through exemplars in every realm.

When you encounter excellence in any form—a majestic tree, an inspired teacher, a perfected master—you are beholding God's signature. In your daily life, learn to recognize the sacred in the exemplary: the integrity of a mentor, the generosity of a friend, the discipline of a practitioner—each is a window into the infinite.
