Shri Ramchandra Kripalu Bhaj Man (Ram Stuti)
Shri Ramchandra Kripalu Bhaj Man is a five-verse hymn of praise to Rama by the poet-saint Tulsidas, from his collection Vinaya Patrika. It is often sung as the Ram Stuti in homes and temples, especially on Ram Navami.
Lyrics
shri ramachandra kripalu bhaja mana harana bhavabhaya darunam | navakanja lochana kanja mukha kara kanja pada kanjarunam ||1||
O mind, worship the compassionate Shri Ramachandra, who takes away the harsh fear of worldly life. His eyes are like fresh lotuses, his face is a lotus, and his hands and feet are like red lotuses.
kandarpa aganita amita chhavi navanila nirada sundaram | patapita manahu tadita ruchi shuchi naumi janaka sutavaram ||2||
His beauty is greater than countless gods of love; he is lovely as a fresh dark-blue rain cloud. His yellow garment shines like pure lightning. I bow to him, the husband of Janaka's daughter, Sita.
bhaja dinabandhu dinesha danava daityavansha nikandanam | raghunanda anandakanda kosalachanda dasharatha nandanam ||3||
Worship the friend of the humble, radiant as the sun, who uproots the clans of demons; the joy of the Raghu family, the root of bliss, the moon of Kosala, the son of Dasharatha.
shira mukuta kundala tilaka charu udara anga vibhushanam | ajanubhuja shara chapa dhara sangrama jita kharadushanam ||4||
He wears a crown on his head, earrings, a beautiful tilak and fine ornaments on every limb. His arms reach his knees; he holds bow and arrows; he defeated Khara and Dushana in battle.
iti vadati tulasidasa shankara shesha muni mana ranjanam | mama hridaya kanja nivasa kuru kamadi khaladala ganjanam ||5||
So says Tulsidas: you who delight the minds of Shiva, Shesha and the sages, make your home in the lotus of my heart, and crush the gang of wrongdoers within: desire and the rest.
manu jahim racheu milihi so baru sahaja sundara samvaro | karuna nidhana sujana silu sanehu janata ravaro || ehi bhanti gauri asisa suni siya sahita hiyam harashim ali | tulasi bhavanihi puji puni puni mudita mana mandira chali ||
(Often sung after the stuti (Ramcharitmanas, Balakanda: chhand).) (Gauri to Sita:) "The groom your heart is set on, naturally handsome and dark, will be yours. He is an ocean of compassion and all-knowing, and he knows your goodness and love." Hearing Gauri's blessing, Sita and her companions rejoiced. Tulsidas says: worshipping Bhavani again and again, Sita went back to the palace with a happy heart.
jani gauri anukula siya hiya harashu na jai kahi | manjula mangala mula bama anga pharakana lage ||
(Often sung after the stuti (Ramcharitmanas, Balakanda: sortha).) Knowing Gauri was pleased with her, Sita felt a joy beyond words, and her left side began to twitch, a lovely sign of good fortune.
Meaning of Shri Ramchandra Kripalu Bhaj Man (Ram Stuti)
The hymn speaks to the singer's own mind: "O mind, worship the compassionate Shri Ramachandra." Most of it then describes Rama, verse by verse: his lotus-like eyes, face, hands and feet; a beauty greater than countless gods of love; the dark colour of a rain cloud and a yellow garment bright as lightning; his crown, earrings and ornaments; and the bow and arrows with which he defeated Khara and Dushana.
In the last verse Tulsidas names himself and asks Rama, who delights Shiva, Shesha and the sages, to live in the lotus of his heart and drive out desire and the other inner enemies. The language is a Sanskrit-flavoured Awadhi/Braj, which is why many words end in "-am" like Sanskrit.

Story & Symbolism
Tulsidas (16th–17th century) is best known for the Ramcharitmanas and the Hanuman Chalisa. Shri Ramchandra Kripalu comes from his later collection of devotional songs, the Vinaya Patrika ("letter of petition"), where it is pada 45. When it is sung, it is very often followed by a chhand and a sortha from the Ramcharitmanas (Balakanda), the passage where Goddess Gauri blesses Sita that she will marry the one her heart has chosen. Those lines are not part of the Vinaya Patrika hymn; on this page they are shown separately so it is clear where each part comes from.
