Chapter 2 · Verse 51 · Sankhya Yoga
Bhagavad Gita 2.51
Sanskrit
Transliteration
karma-jaṁ buddhi-yuktā hi phalaṁ tyaktvā manīṣhiṇaḥ janma-bandha-vinirmuktāḥ padaṁ gachchhanty-anāmayam
In plain words
You are exhausted from trying to control what cannot be controlled—the outcome of your marriage, your child's choices, whether the debt comes back, whether the healing will work. Krishna says: you are not responsible for the fruit. You are only responsible for showing up with integrity, with love, with your whole effort—and then releasing your white-knuckled grip on how it turns out. The moment you separate the doing from the demanding is the moment you become free, even while your heart is still in the struggle.
Word by Word
The wise ones do not chase the fruits of their labor—they have already understood that action itself is the sacred ground, and attachment to outcomes is the invisible chain binding us to suffering. When the intellect is anchored in this truth, the doer becomes free even while acting, for they have surrendered the fruit to the divine will.
This is the liberation Krishna offers: not escape from life, but freedom within it through the simple act of releasing your grip on what you cannot ultimately control.
