Simplified Perspective

The Lord reveals here a subtle spiritual poison: the performance of austerity for recognition, honor, and applause rather than for purification of the soul. When we practice discipline to be seen, admired, or praised, we bind ourselves to the restless mode of passion—a state of constant seeking that produces only temporary satisfaction and inner fragmentation.

True tapas arises from love of truth itself, not from the ego's hunger for validation. In our modern pursuit of wellness and self-improvement, we must honestly ask whether our practices serve our awakening or merely feed our need to be somebody special.
