History of the mantra

This mantra’s roots can be found in the 1st century C.E. derived from a chant associated with Shiva.

But it first appeared in the Karandavyuha Sutra around the 4th century CE where it is associated with Avalokiteshvara.

In the Karandavyuha Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha states that the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra is the most beneficial mantra.

He wove this aspiration into this ancient mantra to the thousands of Buddhas and then received the teachings from Buddha Amitabha.

Meaning of the Mantra

The literal translation of the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra is "Hail the Jewel in the Lotus."

But the beauty of this powerful mantra is in its simplicity. Its power can be experienced by a layman and a Buddhist scholar alike.

The 14th Dalai Lama says that the meaning of the six-syllable mantra is important to internalize while chanting.

The first syllable 'Om' acknowledges the imperfections of the practitioner and the purity of the Buddha.

Om has a very special place in both Hinduism and Buddhism. It is considered the sound of the universe.

The next two syllables 'Ma-ni', meaning jewel, establishes the intention to achieve perfection.
