History of the Mantra

During a great cosmic battle between the gods and demons, the powerful demon Raktabeej emerged, whose every drop of blood produced new demons. The gods were overwhelmed.
To stop this endless onslaught, Goddess Durga invoked her fiercest form - Kalaratri. She consumed Raktabeej's blood before it touched the ground, defeating the demon and bringing balance back to the cosmos.
Her fearsome appearance symbolized destruction for evil and protection for the righteous.
Kalaratri means "the dark night," embodying the night of ignorance, fear, and destruction. Her terrifying form includes dark black skin, wild flowing hair, three bloodshot eyes, and a necklace of skulls.
With two of her four hands holding a sword and a torch, she rides a donkey, symbolizing her mastery over darkness and ignorance.
Known as both Kali and Kalaratri, this form represents time's all-consuming nature and the death of all evil. Though terrifying in appearance, Kalaratri’s essence is protective.
She removes fear, ignorance, and obstacles, bringing light and wisdom. Devotees worship her to conquer their inner demons, as she symbolizes transformation, destroying darkness so that purity and light may arise.
