Lyrics:
|| Aum - Aum - Aum ||
-
Meaning :
'Aum' is the seed sound or bija mantra of the cosmos and brings a sense of oneness through chanting it
OR
I acknowledge my divine oneness with the cosmos
'Aa' (pronounced as "ah") represents the beginning, creation, and the waking state of consciousness. It is associated with the energy of Brahma, the creator aspect of the divine.
'Oo' (pronounced as a prolonged "oo" sound) represents the sustenance, preservation, and the dream state of consciousness. It is associated with the energy of Vishnu, the preserver aspect of the divine.
'Mm' (pronounced as a nasalized "m" sound) represents the dissolution, transformation, and deep sleep state of consciousness. It is associated with the energy of Shiva, the destroyer and transformer aspect of the divine.
When combined together in the chanting of 'Aum', these three sounds symbolize the entire cycle of creation, preservation, and dissolution.

Variations of the Mantra

This mantra may be simply called the Om mantra or the Aum mantra.
The mantra is primarily chanted as 'Aum' or 'Om', but variations in pronunciation and spelling may exist based on different traditions or personal preferences.
The 'Om' sound skips the 'Aa' sound at the beginning. But most texts suggest chanting the 'Aum' variation, with all 3 syllables. The mantra meaning of this chant shows little variation.

History of the Mantra

The Aum mantra holds a deep significance in Hinduism and is rooted in the ancient scriptures known as the Vedas.
It finds its origin in the oldest of the four Vedas, the Rigveda, which is believed to have been composed thousands of years ago. In the Rigveda, Aum is referred to as the primal sound, the cosmic vibration that resonates through the universe and gives rise to all creation.
According to Vedic philosophy, the universe emerged from a primordial sound, often symbolized as 'Nada Brahma' or the sound of Brahman, the ultimate reality.
This sound is said to be the source of everything manifest and unmanifest, and Aum is considered its audible representation. Aum is regarded as the sound that reverberates within all beings and all levels of existence.
The concept of Aum as the sound of creation is further explored in the Upanishads, which are philosophical texts associated with the Vedas.
The Mandukya Upanishad specifically delves into the significance of Aum as the fundamental sound that encompasses the entire range of human experience and consciousness.
