History of the Mantra

There are several stories that illustrate Shiva’s legendary calmness and inner balance. One such story has Sage Bhrigu going to each of the Trimurti to test their capacity for patience.
Sage Bhrigu, one of the Saptarishis, was assigned the task of determining which deity among Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva was the most patient and worthy of supreme devotion. To test them, he approached each god in a different way, intending to provoke them.
Brahma was provoked initially, but calmed dwon eventually, when Sage Bhrigu refused to praise or prostrate before him. Lord Vishnu was kind and caring even after Bhrigu stepped on his chest, concerned more for Bhrigu’s feet despite the apparent insult.
Then, Bhrigu went to Mount Kailash and shouted insults at Lord Shiva. However, Shiva, who was deep in meditation, remained unaffected and silent.
When Bhrigu became aggressive and disturbed his meditation, Shiva merely opened his eyes and smiled, radiating unshaken peace. He neither cursed nor reacted, simply acknowledging Bhrigu’s presence.
No measure of distraction could shake Shiva from his peaceful core. This truth is what is praised in the Shivam Shivakaram Mantra.
