Variations of the Mantra

The Saraswati Dwadasha Namavali Mantra or the 12 Names of Saraswati Devi is a collection of references to Goddess Saraswati and her various qualities admired by all.
In South Indian traditions, Saraswati is sometimes called Kalaimagal or Kalaivani, which means "goddess of arts.” Hence the mantra can be referred to as the 12 Names of Kalimagal or Kalaivani.
Namavali means list of names. So some Namavalis attributed to Saraswati may have only eight names (Ashtottara Namavali), while others expand beyond 12 names to include 16, 24, or even 108 names of Saraswati.
Additional descriptive titles such as Manohari (one who captivates the mind) and Devi Veena Pustaka Dharini (the goddess holding the veena and scriptures) are sometimes used in this chant for poetic emphasis.
