History of the Mantra

The Nataraja Mantra is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and the veneration of Lord Shiva as Nataraja, the "Lord of Dance."
Nataraja is a significant aspect of Shiva, symbolizing his role in the cosmic cycles of creation, preservation, and destruction.
Nataraja is often depicted as dancing within a circle of fire, representing the cosmic fire that consumes everything in the universe and the eternal cycle of time. The dance is called the "Ananda Tandava," which means the Dance of Bliss, suggesting that through his dance, Shiva is both the source and the dissolution of the cosmos.
The story behind the first appearance of Nataraja is deeply embedded in the mythology of South India. According to legend, the rishis of Darukavanam were arrogant and practiced severe penances to control the gods. They used magical powers to invoke a fierce demon named Muyalaka, who was indestructible even to the weapons of the gods.
In response to the pleas for help, Shiva appeared in the form of Nataraja. Muyalaka attempted to attack Shiva, but he was subdued and crushed under the feet of Nataraja, symbolizing the triumph of divine forces over evil.
The rishis soon realized their arrogance and fell at the feet of Nataraja, seeking forgiveness. From this point onwards, Nataraja became a symbol of protection and a destroyer of evil forces.
Shiva as Nataraja embodies the powerful cosmic forces that can bring balance to the universe. He is the protector of righteousness and the vanquisher of evil. The Nataraja Mantra, through its rhythmic chant, invokes these powerful cosmic energies, aligning the devotee with the divine forces that combat negativity and create harmony.
The mantra calls upon Shiva in his aspects as Nataraja and Shivaraja, seeking his blessings for protection, strength, and the power to overcome obstacles. It emphasizes the dual nature of Shiva as the dancer who brings both destruction and rejuvenation, highlighting his role as the lord of the cosmic dance.
