History of the Mantra

The Madhurashtakam mantra is a beautiful Sanskrit devotional hymn composed by Sri Vallabhacharya, a revered 15th-century saint and philosopher, and founder of the Pushtimarg tradition of Vaishnavism.
The word "Madhura" means sweet, and this ashtakam (eight-verse hymn) is an ecstatic praise of Lord Krishna, describing every aspect of him as being divinely sweet—his lips, smile, gait, flute, actions, and even his anger.
Each line of the verses ends with the word madhuram, emphasizing the loving sweetness and charm Krishna embodies.
Once, little Krishna stealthily stole butter from the gopis’ homes. Caught with butter smeared on his cheeks, he flashed an innocent smile that melted their anger.
Instead of scolding him, the gopis offered more butter, enchanted by his charm.
This simple act became symbolic of Krishna’s madhurya - his divine sweetness that disarms ego, evokes love, and draws hearts effortlessly toward him, showing that even mischief becomes sacred in the presence of pure love.
It is this irresistible quality of Krishna that is brought up in the Madhurashtakam mantra, in the hopes that a devotee can experience this magic for themselves.
