History of the Mantra

The Lingashtakam mantra is deeply connected to the story of how the Shiva Linga came to symbolize Lord Shiva's boundless and formless nature.
According to Hindu mythology, there was once a dispute between Brahma, the creator, and Vishnu, the preserver, over who was supreme. To resolve this, Lord Shiva manifested himself as an infinite pillar of light, called the Jyotirlinga.
Both Brahma and Vishnu attempted to find the top and bottom of the pillar, but while Vishnu conceded his defeat, Brahma lied, claiming to have found the top. In response, Shiva revealed his true form, cursing Brahma to be unacknowledged in rituals, while Vishnu was eternally worshipped.
This pillar of light, which is formless and eternal, became the Shiva Linga, symbolizing the infinite, omnipresent energy of Shiva.
Worshipping the Linga thus became a way to honor Shiva’s boundless, transcendental power, as the Lingashtakam mantra beautifully encapsulates.
