History of the Mantra
The Hanuman Chalisa a 40-verse devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Hanuman, a prominent deity in Hinduism, known for his immense strength, devotion, and loyalty.
The Chalisa is attributed to the saint Tulsidas, who is believed to have written it in the 16th century. It praises Hanuman's heroic qualities, his unwavering devotion to Lord Rama, and his role in the epic Ramayana.
The Hanuman Chalisa is recited by millions of devotees to seek Hanuman’s blessings for courage, strength, protection, and the removal of obstacles.
Tulsidas, who had already written the epic Ramcharitmanas, had once been humiliated by a group of saints, leading to a period of despair.
At this point, Hanuman, in his divine form, appeared before Tulsidas and advised him to seek solace in his devotion, emphasizing that through surrender to God, all troubles can be overcome.
Inspired by this divine encounter, Tulsidas composed the Hanuman Chalisa to express his admiration and devotion to Hanuman, believing that the prayer would invoke Hanuman’s protection and blessings for all who recite it.
The Chalisa consists of forty verses, each lauding Hanuman's virtues - his bravery, humility, wisdom, and service to Lord Rama. Tulsidas believed that reciting these verses with devotion could bring peace, strength, and protection from evil.
The Hanuman Chalisa is widely recited to this day and is considered a powerful prayer for overcoming obstacles, mental calmness, and spiritual progress.
