In ancient Vedic traditions, the Guru was not merely a teacher but a transmitter of Brahman itself - the ultimate reality. The word Guru is composed of "Gu" (darkness) and "Ru" (remover), signifying one who dispels ignorance.
This mantra honors the Guru as both bliss incarnate (Brahmananda) and a radiant guide lighting the seeker’s path. Throughout Vedic history, initiation into sacred knowledge (Diksha) was impossible without the Guru’s blessing.
The Upanishads, particularly the Mundaka and Chandogya, repeatedly describe the Guru as essential for liberation. Chanting this mantra is an act of surrender and invitation, asking the Guru’s light to awaken the dormant divinity within and lead the soul beyond suffering into eternal freedom.
