History of the Mantra
In Hindu tradition, Shiva is revered not only as a destroyer but also as a force of transformation - of thought, emotion, and inner state.
His role is deeply linked to helping devotees rise above confusion and cultivate positive, purposeful thinking.
The four names in the ‘Ga’kara Shiva Namavali reflect this: Gangadharaya refers to the Lord who holds the sacred Ganga, symbolizing purification of the mind. Giridhanvine, the bearer of the mountain bow, represents strength and control.
Girishaya, Lord of the mountains, evokes quiet contemplation; and Gananathaya, leader of divine beings, reminds us of inner discipline and harmony.
Mythology describes Shiva’s approach toward the demon Bhasmasura and his antics, as an example of forethought over violence.
Bhasmasura was a demon who performed intense penance to please Lord Shiva. Pleased by his devotion, Shiva granted him a boon: anyone whose head Bhasmasura touched would instantly turn to ashes.
But Bhasmasura, intoxicated by his newfound power, tried to test it on Shiva himself. Shiva, rather than retaliate with anger, chose to protect the world and teach wisdom through non-violence.
He fled, evading Bhasmasura’s pursuit, until Lord Vishnu, at Shiva’s request, intervened in disguise and cleverly tricked Bhasmasura into placing his own hand on his head, turning himself to ashes.
This story highlights Shiva’s foresight, restraint, and willingness to guide even the misguided without immediate punishment.
It shows his role as a protector, one who upholds dharma and leads others, even demons, toward better understanding - if they’re willing to learn.
