History of the Kavach

The concept of Lakshmi kavach, a protective armor invoking the goddess of wealth and prosperity, has deep roots in Hindu tradition.
According to the tale found in the Shri Vaishnava tradition, Lakshmi and Vishnu were manifested as deities in an temple, which was solely for people from the upper class.
During the festival of Diwali, Lakshmi decided to visit and bless the untouchables who were not allowed in the temple. When Vishnu angrily forbade her from visiting them again, Lakshmi rebelled and left to live among a community of untouchable sweepers.
In her presence, this impoverished community began to flourish, with food growing abundantly and people prospering. Meanwhile, Vishnu's temple became impoverished. Vishnu had to beg Lakshmi to return, and she agreed only if he promised never to restrict her impulse to offer blessings and grace.
This story exemplifies Lakshmi's universal compassion and her willingness to help all devotees, regardless of their social status.
